I really enjoyed this piece, it had me reflect on the tenderness of being human and connecting with others. If I had a highlighter, and this was paper, I would highlight every line, write in between them. You made me think so deeply and lovingly at the relationships I've built, and I'm so grateful for that.
I love the idea of my life being entangled with someone else's even at a distance. I love the idea that it's better to keep the door open, that life is long and people might come back. I love that idea that, ultimately, we're all just seeking connection. I really enjoyed reading this :)
yess I love this quote I read somewhere that 'your roots get tangled' - so even if you grow apart, some part of you is nourished by another, that you are irrevocably changed by intimacy and closeness to another person.
Beautiful and tender. I have a 7 year old daughter who is starting to navigate the complexities of building real, strong human connection and I feel like every day is full of heartbreak... But it's that same idea ... that it doesn't have to be an ALL or NOTHING... that I try to instill in her.
I was so surprised and flattered to see myself mentioned here. Thank you. So glad to have "met" you and begin reading you. 🥰
I really enjoyed reading this piece. Every part struck a chord and I especially like the part where you spoke of not thinking friendship in binaries, which is something I've always done.
thank you - it can be so challenging not to create pre-suppositions or label our friendships this way or that! And leaning into the complexities make friendships all the more impactful/meaningful over time.
Such a thoughtful and reflective piece. I've been thinking about friendship a lot recently and this has made me think about it even more deeply. I do wish substack had a way for us to highlight different parts.
So excited to have found you here. I adored the gentle urgency of your article. The anecdote at the beginning is fascinating and something I’ve never heard about before. Friendship is forged in those subtle, quiet, day-to-day moments of our lives — full of friction, as you say.
I also just returned from Oahu for the first time last month and absolutely love everything French (so was happy to listen to Laissez Moi Danser). Would love to connect further 🤍
this is so incredibly beautiful and poignant. the idea that we all ebb and flow, miraculously in and out of each other's lives, is something we all know deep down i think, but it often stops us from creating and investing in connection that we think might not "last" or may not be "permanent". the example you gave of investing in communities and the space you're in even if you're not sure you'll be there in a year. investment is really the cost of living - the price for tenderness, intimacy, and love. time is so precious and this piece of writing articulated the feelings i've been wrangling with.
hi, just stumbled on your work and i love the piece but also the creative headers?? like it's such a nice font and color, and it works on both light and dark mode!!!
anyway, thabk you for writing this piece. ive seen a lot of works about the friendship recession but i like how you describe the necessary weight and burden of friendship, esp in adulthood. how lovely it is to remember we matter to each other in a way that is both emotional and almost physical.
Omg thank you, what a delightful message to read and glad you like the lilac. Appreciate your thoughtfulness and second that idea that it's a tie on multiple levels.
Lovely article :) Got me thinking about the ways we are seen by or see others as a means to build connection. New reader but excited to explore more of your work.
Thank you for this piece! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s wonderful to have experienced different types of friendships and this made me think about my beautiful friends!

"I’ve accepted that things can crumble in ways I can’t anticipate, also that new people can enter my life and still rearrange the wiring in my brain."
