I stumbled upon your writing via Twitter and am so glad to have gotten to this post. I've been struggling with figuring out what it means to be present, and the reframing of presence hits different. Thank you for sharing.
Murakami is spot on about running as a metaphor. I didn't start for very high-minded reasons, but gradually, it's become an expression of personal philosophy and has influenced how I approach other aspects of my life.
I think there's something unique about the mechanics of progression in running (importance of rest, sustainability, etc.) that emphasizes the principles and practices in Atomic Habits. I guess you could summarize it as effort, presence, & patience!
thanks spencer!! & yes Murakami's running is a huge inspiration - would def rec his book What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. Discusses exactly what you're talking about :)
ahh thank u for sm for writing this, it really resonated. especially the part about practice becoming easier and more fun leading to more improvement leading to more practice.
Loved the concept of effort-presence-patience.
